Railway Walk Clacton on Sea

Arriving at Clacton on Sea railway Station on the train at 10.16, we will head out from the station towards the sea front, passing some of Clacton’s Grand buildings showing its historic hay-day of holidaymakers gone by.

From the pier we will head South through the formal pleasure gardens, stopping at the RNLI lifeboat station for a short talk about the 200 years of the lifeboats, before heading on towards the first of our Martello Towers, now a tea shop, then on along the beach with stories of Clacton’s history from steamboats to Butlins until we reach Jaywick.

At the far end of the town sits the Jaywick Martello tower and here we will stop for tea and a look around the Tower to see how these buildings served the country from the Napoleonic war onwards.

We then return to Clacton to catch the return train.

We will leave the station and head down towards the pier and the colourful beach huts that line the promenade. From here we will head North along the beach past the seafront architecture of this hidden gem on the North Essex Coast.  Past the Naze Tower and Discovery Centre and into the John Weston Nature reserve, where ancient meets recent history with fossils and artefacts strewn along the beach of Pennyhole Bay. Around the Nature reserve and back to the Naze tower, to climb the stairs to the top of this incredible structure (not suitable for those with accessibility issues) for a view of the North Essex and South Suffolk coast (weather permitting), don’t forget to bring your camera, you will need it!
